As of 2012, Lady Gaga has stylish collection of nine tattoos. Interestingly enough, she revealed at her Google Does Gaga show that she only had tattoos on the left side of her body because her dad asked her to keep one side pure and clean. She described her left side as her “Iggy Pop” side and her right side as her “Marylin Monroe” side.
Lady Gaga’s left inner wrist has a peace symbol tattoo (4), inspired by her love of John Lennon, as well as a small G treble clef music tattoo design on the small of her back (8). She also has flower tattoo designs of daisies on her left shoulder (1) and roses on her left hip and back (7), done by Kat Von D in 2008, covering her treble clef tattoo.
One of Lady Gaga’s most distinctive tattoos is a German quote from philosopher Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet on her left arm (5) that says once translated: “In the deepest hour of the night, confess to yourself that you would die if you were forbidden to write. And look deep into your heart where it spreads its roots, the answer, and ask yourself, must I write?” Done in 2009, this tattoo honors her favorite philosopher and paints a picture of her own life philosophy. It is also accompanied by a number tattoo of the date 12-18-1974, which is the day her aunt passed away. This tattoo is important to Lady Gaga because her aunt Joanne had always wanted to be a singer, and she frequently credits her at the end of her shows by saying the date 12-18-1974.
Lady Gaga also has several other tattoos, such as a lettering tattoo that says “Tokyo Love” (3) on her left shoulder (done in Tokyo, Japan in 2009), as well as a classic heart tattoo design with “Dad” inside (2) that was done in 2009 next to the “Tokyo Love” tattoo. Finally, Gaga has an other lettering tattoo that says “Little Monsters” (6) next to her Rilke quote, as well as a unicorn tattoo design on her outer left leg (9) with “Born This Way”, in honor of her 2011 album. Lady Gaga explained that unicorns are her favorite mythical animal and that she is weirdly enough obsessed with them.
